Railway Department Park The North Gate Ximending Lungshan Temple National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall
  • A12/13
    Depart from Taoyuan International Airport
  • A1
Taipei Main Station, 6 minutes on foot

The National Taiwan Museum Railway Department Park (60 minutes)
The previous Railway Department of the General Governor of Taiwan, now a National Historic Site and called the Railway Department Park, is at the intersection of Zhongxiao West Road, Tacheng Street, Zhengzhou Road and Yanping North Rd. It is under the jurisdiction of the Taiwan Railways Administration. In May 1918, the first part of the Railway Department Office was finished, which replaced the original yamen used by the Machinery Bureau during the Qing Dynasty. This part of the building was used by subordinate officers. The Railway Department Building is made of bricks and wood. The floor slab of the hallway is made of rail track and concrete. Two towers stood at the entrance. The building is arc-shaped because of its location at the intersection. Both sides have three classic pillars. A veranda on the second floor is two meters wide and supported by two pillars on each side. A large ox-eye window is placed on the tilted roof. In the main hall, the ceiling is curved and pillars are placed to separate the space. Walking up to the second floor on the wooden stairs and you can see the ceiling and the wall are decorated with plaster sculptures. The ceiling is also arched, which is rarely seen in Taiwan.

    The North Gate (20 minutes)
The North Gate is at the intersection of Zhongxiao West Road, Yanping North Road, Zhonghua Road, Yanping South Road and Bo’ai Road in Zhongzheng District. There are five historic city gates in Taipei: the East Gate (Jingfu Gate), West Gate (Baocheng Gate), South Gate (Lizheng Gate), Little South Gate (Chongxi Gate) and North Gate (Cheng’en Gate). They were built by Liu Ming-chuan during the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty as a measure to expedite urban development by encouraging businessmen to invest in or build houses/streets in Taipei City. Also known as Cheng’en Gate, the North Gate in Taipei City of old served as a major gateway to Dadaocheng. The two-story fortress of North Gate is enclosed by sturdy walls in the form of a highly guarded citadel. For surveillance and defense reasons, the square- and round-shaped window openings on the front and back of fortress are the only two features on the second floor. Similar to the East Gate, the North Gate in its inception had a small enclosure on the outside, commonly referred to as “urn city”, or “Wong Cheng” in Chinese. There used to be a horizontal plaque saying “The Key to Territory Safety” hung across the gate. The plaque was unfortunately removed by Japanese colonial rulers and is now located on the empty lot in front of the North Gate for display. In light of the emerging trend of cultural heritage preservation in recent years, the city authorities decided to abandon a demolition plan of the historic North Gate. Of the five ancient city gates, the North Gate is the only one that remains the same in appearance as during the Qing Dynasty. It is one of the most valuable state-designated historic sites in Taipei.

  • BL11/G12
    Ximending (80 minutes)
This district acquired the name "Ximen" during the era of Japanese Rule. At the time, most people lived in the city center, and Ximen served as a suburban recreational place. In 1896, the first theater, "Tokyo Pavilion," was inaugurated. In 1922, the area was formally named "Ximen." In the early days, Ximen was brimming with movie theaters, and most of them were situated on Ermei Street, Chengdu Road, and Xining S. Road. The streets filled with movie theaters marked Ximen's main area of development. After the nationalist government came to Taiwan in 1949, much more capital was introduced to this place. Other than movie theaters, department stores and other recreational business venues popped up. As soon as Zhonghua Shopping Mall was established, Ximen became the country's largest entertainment hub. Ximen bears witness to history and it leads younger-generation trends. Middle-aged visitors and elders enjoy finding traces of the past in Ximen, and youngsters love showing off their fashionable dressing styles here. People mingle and exchange their views here. Everyone can find what they need, right here in Ximen Shopping District!
  • BL10
    Lungshan Temple (40 minutes)
Lungshan Temple was built in 1738 and dedicated to Guanyin (the Goddess of Mercy). The temple was severely damaged during the Taipei Air Raid of 1945, but its statue of Guanyin survived. Today it has become a sacred place where the local people pray for blessings or find their inner peace. In addition to the Goddess of Mercy, the temple is devoted to Yue Lao (the Matchmaker God), Wenchang Dijun (the God of Literature), Songzi Niangniang (the maiden who brings children) and many more. Here you will learn about Taiwan’s religious belief and practices. You can also pray for yourself and your family, and even try asking the gods for advice by tossing divination blocks.
  • G10/R08
National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (60 minutes)
The National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is an impressive monument in memory of the late president of the Republic of China, Chang Kai-Shek. To reach the main hall, you need to climb up 89 steps, which represent Chang Kai-Shek’s age when he died. The changing of the guard ceremony takes place every hour on the hour from 09:00 in the main hall. In addition to the majestic main hall of the memorial, the exquisite Chinese garden around the building and the vast plaza are also worth visiting. If you come here in the early morning, you can see people practicing Qigong on the grounds.

Taipei 101 Mall, the fashion lovers’ paradise. The mall houses hundreds of fashionable stores and restaurants, along with a food court and a supermarket. From luxury brands to fast fashion retailers, from Michelin star restaurants to cheap eats, you can always find something for your there.

Taipei 101 Wind damper in Taipei 101

The famous skyscraper, Taipei 101, stands right next to the mall. It was once the tallest building in the world and reaches a height of 508 meters, towering over the skyline of Taipei. The building has 101 stories, with an observatory deck on the 89th floor where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Taipei City. Not only that, it has one of the top 3 fastest elevators in the world; from the 5th to the 89th floor, it only takes 37 seconds.

    Xinyi Shopping District (100 minutes)
Known as the "Manhattan of Taipei," the Xinyi Shopping District brings together upscale malls, Eslite Bookstore, cinemas and all manner of international cuisine. This is also a great spot to enjoy the evening view and pulse of Taipei.

Four Four South Village (40 minutes)
At a corner in Taipei’s high-end Xinyi District, a few low-rise houses sit closely together. These somewhat crowded buildings chronicled the tears and joy of veterans who migrated to Taiwan in the early days. This is the former site of Taipei City’s Military Dependents’ Village, called the “Sisinan Village.” With fast economic growth and rising living standards, these old houses no longer served the needs of the residents. The City Government initially planned to rebuild the site in 1999. However, through persuasion from cultural circles, the City Government designated this area as the Cultural Hall and Cultural Park of Xinyi District. It started operations in 2003. The Hall consists of four symmetrical buildings. Some houses that sat tightly next to each other have been converted into an open space for events and exhibitions. The area now has an exhibition hall, Military Dependents’ Village Exhibition Hall, performance hall and community hall. The exterior still retains the unique low-rise and simple, rustic style of the Military Dependents’ Village. The narrow alleys and footpaths take visitors down memory lane. It is a fascinating contrast to the neighboring towering Taipei 101 and surrounding modern buildings, and a compelling testimony to Taipei’s urban development.
  • R07/O05
Dongmen Station, 1 minute on foot

    Yongkang Street (60 minutes)
Yongkang Street is the origin of Taipei alley culture. Without a doubt, it is the crème de la crème in terms of gourmet cuisine. Originally earning fame for its traditional cuisine, such as Din Tai Fung's Taiwanese dumplings and the Shou-Lan Gourmet, the 20-plus year-old Hui-Liu Restaurant is representative of the new healthy-eating fashion. This style combines tea and vegetarian cuisine with brilliant interior design and classical music in the background. It portrays a sense of style and leisure. Favorites of scholars include the Yeh Tang Tea Culture Research Institute, a place with an emphasis on traditional Taiwanese tea culture, as well as the contemporary cafes and tea stores along the alleys of Yongkang, Qingtian and Longquan. Each shop is run in the unique style of its owner, who is always glad to chat and share with customers the beauty that is called “life.”
